Charles Fort
They did remember one story Don told them. The Spanish Armada came to Kinsale to help the Irish battle the British in 1601. They were defeated at the Battle of Kinsale. Afterward, the British built Charles Fort to control the entrance to the harbor.
The buildings in the fort were in perfect condition when the British withdrew their troops after Ireland was granted independence in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the IRA eventually took up residence and they burned all the buildings when they left. Restoration work is now underway.
