Monticello

Thomas Jefferson's home was not in our original plans, but when we found out how close it was to where we were going to be, we had to work it in. And it wasn't hard to do: there's always room for Monticello.

First we walked the grounds with Mary Beth. There are some big trees on the place, a flower garden in back, and a large, well-tended vegetable garden down to one side.

They had some healthy cockscomb celosia, so Roy had to try one on.

Big. Freakin'. Sugar maple.

Snailflowers were actually growing in the vegetable gardens.

Steps lead down from the house to the vegetable garden.

Survey the vegetable garden in all its glory.

Some areas, like this icehouse and the subterranean walkway behind it, are undergoing meticulous restoration.

We toured the house, but no photography is allowed inside.
