The 2006 Tomatoes, March-April

It was a mild winter. Actually, it was a warm winter. We could have put our tomatoes in the ground a couple of weeks earlier than we might in more normal years. But since we seeded them at the usual time, they weren't ready to go in the ground until the usual time. February 27 was planting-out day this year. Here they are on March 1:

Sungold is front and center. To the right is Champion, and (continuing counterclockwise), Houston Brandy, Green Grape, USDA Golden Queen (back left), and Gregori's Altai. Houston Brandy is one we named and saved seed from when what was supposed to be a Brandywine OTV came out pink and sweet.

I thought it would be neat to chronicle their growth by taking a picture from the same vantage point each week. But I didn't always remember, so here they are on the 15th:

At this point, Champion was sizing up some fruit.

Sungold, of course, had a number set, as well, but my pictures didn't come out.

On the 24th:

On the 29th, the taller plants needed a 2nd level of cages:

And on April 5:

At this point, everybody had some fruit set, and here they are —
Champion:

Houston Brandy:

Green Grape:

USDA Golden Queen (big plant, not many fruit yet)

Gregori's Altai (loaded up early, as usual):
