The 2006 Tomatoes, May

May 3

Warm weather has continued, with a couple of nice rains. The tomatoes have continued to thrive, and Sungold is accelerating production.

But there is trouble already on the horizon

May 11

(I didn't get around to it on Wednesday.) Not much change since last week.

I think this will be our peak harvest for the season. The stink bugs are that bad.

This set includes a Houston Brandy (lower left), a Golden Queen USDA (lower left inside the container), Champions, Gregori's Altais, and plenty of Sungolds.

The overall look of the bed hasn't changed in a couple of weeks. The plants are devoting more energy to ripening fruit, and less to producing more vines. Some cool fronts have given them a bit of relief from the early hot spell we've had.

If you look closely, you will see that growth continues. Sungold in particular is doing its traditional escape from the bird netting.

And a somewhat sad note: Green Grape's fruit were simply not good, so we removed it from life support by cutting all its stems at the ground. Its neighboring plants will will in the space, no doubt.

May 25-26

The plants continue to fill in the space under the bird netting. Squirrels and birds discovered a large hole in the netting before we did, and we lost a nice Champion as well as a few Sungolds.
Frankly, we can spare a few of the Sungolds. We picked over 3 ½ lbs. of them this time.

We're even sparing some of its foliage to feed this little guy and a sibling or two.
